Trip description
The Salaca — roughly 100 km along one of Latvia's most thrilling rivers. If you've already paddled the Gauja and last summer's Salaca plans fell through, this is the summer to finally make it happen. This time, though, we're doing it a little differently — as a demo expedition. That means setting off onto an unfamiliar river, bringing people along for the ride, and discovering it all together. We've done our research through travel blogs and maps, and we know what's waiting for us: around 100 km of adventure, a series of rapids, and one of the finest rivers in Latvia — one that draws thousands of paddlers every summer. In other words: a leap into the unknown, head first. We don't know exactly where we'll camp or how long each day will turn out to be. If that kind of open-ended adventure doesn't scare you — if it excites you — come join us. Two certified guides will be with the group throughout, ready to assist and support. We scout every set of rapids ourselves before the group runs them, and we'll show you how to navigate each one safely. Fitness Level Participants should be fit enough to paddle 30–40 km in a single day on moving water (this is only required on one day of the trip). The current can be fast in places, and some manoeuvring skill is needed. We paddle primarily in two-person touring kayaks, which are well suited to the Salaca and very stable. Meals During the day, everyone cooks from their own supplies. In the evenings, there's the option to prepare a shared hot meal together. Provisional Itinerary (Subject to change as we go — nothing is set in stone, and we adapt to the group's pace and wishes.) Day 1 – Vecate → Mazsalaca (~13 km) We set off from Vecate, just below Lake Burtnieks. As most of this day is taken up with logistics and getting to the put-in, the first day on the water is a shorter one. Day 2 – Caves, Outcrops and Nature Parks (~26 km) We take it steady, because there's plenty to stop and take in along the way: Skaņaiskalns Nature Park – several natural landmarks right along the riverbank Skaņaiskalns Cliff – renowned for its remarkable echo Dauģēni Caves – Latvia's longest sandstone caves, stretching over 300 metres Neļķu Outcrops – striking red sandstone walls, highly photogenic Enģeļu ala (Angel's Cave) – a spot that's almost impossible to paddle past without reaching for a camera The day could end at a paid campsite, or we push on a little further to find a free wild camp. Since this is a demo trip, we can adjust distances as needed — but the caves take time to explore, so we won't stretch the day too long. Day 3 – The Longest and Most Technical Stretch (34–37 km) Staicele Weir – the remnant of an old paper mill dam; a technically demanding spot where we'll land and portage beforehand Livonian Memorial – Staicele is a town with strong Livonian cultural heritage Vikšnu Caves – smaller caves, but a fascinating stop along the way We look for a campsite near Mērnieki. Day 4 – Finish at Salacgrīva Sarkanais Red Sandstone Outcrops – dramatic and visually stunning Salacgrīva Town – where the river meets the Gulf of Riga Linnamägi – ruins of a fortress dating back to 1226 Lamprey Fishing Sites – Salacgrīva's living tradition of lamprey fishing What Is a Demo Trip? On a demo expedition, the guides are also venturing onto unfamiliar terrain. We bring skill and experience — but this region is new to us too. That means: We don't know in advance whether campsites will be available. We don't know exactly how long each day will take. We solve challenges on the spot. We explore together, just like a real expedition. This trip is for those who value a genuine, authentic experience over a pre-scripted itinerary.
